Ohio jobless rate tops 11 percent for June - Business First of Columbus:

The state’s jobless rate continued its steadgmarch upward, rising from 10.8 percent in May. The unemploymenft rate stood at 6.4 percent in June 2008. The reported the stated lost 33,000 nonfarm jobs last month, pushing down the numberf of employed Ohioans toabou 5.1 million. The ranks of those withourt jobs and actively looking for work climbedto 666,200 in Ohio’s unemployment ranks have increasef by 279,000 persons from June the state reported. “Ohio’s labor market continued to weakenin June,” Job and Family Services Director Douglas Lumpkinb said in a release.
“Significant job lossez in boththe goods-producing and service-providintg industries led to an increase in the unemploymenf rate to 11.1 percent.” Ohio’s seasonally adjusted unemploymentg rate hasn’t been at 11.1 percent sinc the midst of the 1981-82 recession in Decembed 1981. Immediately following the end of that recessio n inNovember 1982, the state jobless rate climbed to 13.8 percent in December and January 1983. It droppesd below 11 percent inOctober 1983. Most industries in the statre performed poorlyin June, the government Ohio officials said manufacturing lost 15,4009 jobs last month, and the service-producinyg work force dropped 15,100 jobs.
The constructiobn sector continuedto shrink, too, losing 2,5000 jobs. While usually a traditionap growth area inpoor economies, the governmeng sector cut 6,000 jobs. The professional and business servicess sector followedclosely behind, eliminating 5,600o positions in the month. Thosee companies that did hire last month operate in the financialo services andinformation sectors, which added 1,10o0 and 500 jobs, respectively. The decline in the manufacturing work forcre over the prior 12 monthsreached 134,000, most of it amonh durable goods makers amid a recessioj that has squeezed consumers, who have cut back on purchases of big-ticket items, such as cars and appliances.
The only employmen segments that have added jobs in the past year are the educatio and healthcare sectors, up 13,800 and the hospitality and leisuree industry, up a modest 1,600 the state reported.
